Brave boy, nine, battled cancer long enough to meet baby sister before passing away

A little boy fought terminal cancer long enough to meet and name his newborn baby sister.
Doctors said Bailey Cooper, nine, who had battled cancer for 15 months, was unlikely to meet his little sister before she was born, but Bailey was determined to meet and name his new sibling.
He held on until mum Rachel gave birth in November and got the chance to name sister Millie as well as spending a few precious weeks with her before losing his battle with cancer on Christmas Eve.
Mum and dad Rachel and Lee said he smiled all the way through his treatment and even told them: “You can only cry for twenty minutes”.
Rachel, 28 said: “We didn’t think he would last that long, but he was determined to meet Millie.
“It got to the end of November, and Millie was born. He hugged her and did everything an older brother would do – change her, wash her, sing to her.”

Wrong woman killed in love triangle murder-for-hire plot, officials say

Wrong woman killed in love triangle murder-for-hire plot, officials say
A murder-for-hire plot spun out of a love triangle went awry when the wrong woman was kidnapped and killed, authorities said.
A woman's body was found Monday in Florida's Ormond Beach and later identified as 42-year-old Janice Marie Zengotita-Torres, who had been reported missing in Osceola County. An investigation ultimately revealed that Zengotita-Torres, who had moved to Florida from Puerto Rico with her family over a year ago, was mistaken for the target of a murder-for-hire plot, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.
Ishnar Lopez-Ramos, 35, allegedly hired Alexis Ramos-Rivera, 22, and his girlfriend Glorianmarie Quinones-Montes, also 22, to kill a woman who was in a relationship with a man she loved. But Lopez-Ramos, Ramos-Rivera and Quinones-Montes apparently mistook Zengotita-Torres for the intended target, the sheriff's office said.
"I get emotional because it touches me so deeply that one of our citizens was killed in such a manner over a mistaken identification and in the end it appears to be a lover’s triangle," Osceola County Sheriff Russ Gibson said at a press conference Friday.
The suspects spotted Zengotita-Torres as she left a store at a shopping center where she worked in Osceola County late Sunday night. They followed her to a parking lot near her home where they allegedly abducted her, forcing her into their car before speeding away. They then drove to a nearby bank where they allegedly withdrew money from the woman's account using her ATM card, according to the sheriff's office.
It wasn't until the suspects took the woman to an apartment in Orlando that they allegedly realized they had abducted the wrong person. But they continued with their alleged plan anyway, the sheriff's office said.

THE BEST SMOOTHIE RECIPES TO POWER YOU IN 2018

Do you struggle to reclaim healthy eating habits as the new year begins? The aftermath of holiday stress and low nutrition can wreak havoc on your overall well-being, not to mention your ability to stay centered and maintain balance between rest and energy, says Stacy Kennedy, chief wellness officer for AVA, a service that provides customized nutritional guidance through text messaging.
To ensure you are getting enough nutrition – and to boost your energy – Kennedy loves smoothies, made in a blender from whole, nutrient-dense foods that meet four major nutritional needs in one portable cup:
  • Hydration, a cornerstone of energy and metabolism
  • Fiber, to keep digestion smooth
  • Protein, to maintain blood sugar and support immunity
  • Vitamins and minerals, to support immunity, regulate energy, and manage your sleep-wake cycle
“Smoothies are opportunities to multitask those goals," says Kennedy. Introduce your imagination to your blender with this "master smoothie" formula:
  • A healthy liquid (dairy milk, nut milk or coconut water)
  • Protein (plain organic Greek yogurt or nut butters)
  • Fruits or vegetables (berries, banana or greens)
  • A frozen element (fruit or ice, depending on the smoothie)
Kennedy suggests starting simply with smoothie recipes that are easy to make in a big batch, so you can freeze unused portions for later. These recipes each make one smoothie, but the recipes can easily be doubled, or more.

NUT BUTTER AND JELLY SMOOTHIE

Blend 10 ounces of almond milk with a frozen banana, a cup of berries, and a tablespoon of the nut butter of your choice. Add a handful of spinach leaves (you won't taste it, Kennedy says) and a sprinkling of chia seeds, spirulina, or other super food, if desired.

NUTRITIONAL TAKEAWAYS:

Protein from the nut butter, potassium from the banana, antioxidants and phytonutrients from the berries.

TROPICAL POWER SMOOTHIE

Blend 10 ounces of unsweetened coconut water with ½ cup of pineapple, ¼ to ½ of a cucumber, a handful of spinach, chard, or kale, and ¼ to ½ of an avocado. Add a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a pinch of sea salt to finish.

NUTRITIONAL TAKEAWAYS:

Hydration and electrolytes from the coconut water, magnesium and B vitamins from the pineapple and greens, protein and healthy fat from the avocado.

PUMPKIN PIE SMOOTHIE

Blend 10 ounces of almond milk with a cup of pureed pumpkin or cooked sweet potato, a teaspoon of honey, a dash of cinnamon, and a sprinkle of chia seeds. Fresh cranberries are a tart and colorful addition, if desired.

NUTRITIONAL TAKEAWAYS:

Electrolytes (potassium) and antioxidants (beta-carotene) from the orange squash, vitamin C from the cranberries.

Ankara should let Cypriots decide on their own future, President says

Ankara should let Cypriots decide on their own future, President says

President Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday he is trying, through his international contacts, to influence Ankara to make it realise that a solution will benefit everyone and that Cypriots should be allowed to decide their own future.
Addressing a memorial in Episkopio village in Limassol, Anastasiades referred to the promise he had made five years ago when he assumed office that, as regards the Cyprus problem, he would act within the boundaries of national dignity, to make an effort with courage and determination “in order to reach a solution which will meet the concerns of Turkish Cypriots without ignoring the rightful demands of Greek Cypriots.”
At the same time, he added, he felt that “in order to operate as a truly European state, we should be truly independent, absolutely independent, absolutely sovereign, so that Cypriots could decide about Cyprus, not Turkey via the Turkish Cypriots.”
“I kept my promise. And I am truly sorry that (Turkey’s) intransigence did not lead to the longed-for reunification in this difficult, determined effort we made,” he said.
Anastasiades said that he has conveyed the message to everyone in the international and European community that he is ready to return to the negotiating table on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem but that, for a new Conference on Cyprus to be reconvened, sufficient preparation must take place so that Ankara’s positions on matters of security can be crystal clear.
At the same time he assured that he is making an effort, through the UN Security Council permanent members, so that Ankara is influenced in such a way that it realises not only that a solution of the Cyprus problem would be to the benefit of the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and Ankara itself.
Ankara, he said, should stop considering that they can create a protectorate within Cyprus by imposing their position on the Turkish Cypriots.
“I would like to hope that a change of approach will take place, because we do not wish for new heroes, rather we want to see our compatriots, young people, working, and prospering for the benefit of our country.”
This, Anastasiades should take place in conditions of peace, stability and in particular in a state which will be completely in line with the EU acquis communautaire.
