Victim's girlfriend says Florida gunman provoked fatal 'stand your ground' shooting

Britany Jacobs, the girlfriend of the man shot and killed in a Florida parking lot last week, says her boyfriend was just coming to her defense and the gunman “wanted someone to be angry at.” Now she wants “justice,” she says.
Jacobs, who witnessed the shooting along with the couple’s 5-year-old son, said she and her two small children were waiting in the car for her boyfriend, Markeis McGlockton, while he ran into a convenience store in Clearwater, Florida. Onlooker Michael Drejka got out of his parked car and began “harassing” her about being parked in a handicap space, she said.
Surveillance video showed McGlockton exiting the store and shoving Drejka to the ground. Drejka then drew a handgun and shot and killed McGlockton.
“He wanted somebody to be angry at. He just wanted someone to fight him,” Jacobs said in an interview with "Good Morning America" on Monday. “He was picking a fight. I’m just sitting, waiting for my family to come back to the car.”
Drejka told deputies in Pinellas County he feared for his life, according to authorities, but McGlockton's girlfriend.
Police said they won't press charges against Drejka, who is white, for shooting McGlockton, who was black, citing the state's so-called "stand your ground" law.
Jacobs, who was waiting in the vehicle with the couple’s two younger children -- an infant and a 3-year-old -- said she started feeling “scared” when she noticed how fast the argument was escalating. It wasn’t long before McGlockton came out along with their 5-year-old son and tried to diffuse the situation.
Surveillance video from the Circle A Food Store in Clearwater, about 30 minutes east of Tampa, showed McGlockton leaving the store and shoving Drejka hard to the ground.
“By this time a witness pulls up and everybody hears us going back and forth with one another. ... A witness goes in the store and he let the owner know that there was somebody out there messing with a woman in a car,” she said. “My man hears what’s going on, sees the guy yelling at me and I’m sitting in the car. My man is defending me and his children, so he pushes him down.

Day care owner gets probation for trying to kill toddler

Nataliia Karia, 43, received her punishment in Hennepin County court after pleading guilty to attempted murder and third-degree assault earlier. She also pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular operation for hitting a pedestrian, a bicyclist and another driver as she fled from her home in a minivan in November 2016.
Karia also must follow court-ordered mental health treatment and will be on electronic home monitoring for at least two months, the Star Tribune reported. She will live with her adult son but cannot have unsupervised contact with her daughters or other minors.
According to the criminal complaint, a father was dropping off his son at Karia's home when Karia led him toward the basement, where he saw the toddler hanging from a noose. He released the child and fled with him. The 16-month-old boy survived.
Judge Jay Quam agreed with the assessment by doctors that Karia was "a low risk" to reoffend. He called her actions "the perfect storm of factors unlikely to ever be repeated."
Defense attorney Brockton Hunter expressed relief on behalf of Karia.
"We came in here with our hearts in our throats," Hunter said.
He said Karia, who has spent 20 months in jail since the incident and will get credit for her time already served, will leave jail no later than Tuesday.
Karia, who arrived in the United States from Ukraine in 2006, promised to follow probation and said in court she was glad no one died.
Prosecutor Christina Warren pushed for prison time. Warren raised doubts that Karia could be properly supervised outside of prison and receive the care she needs to restore her mental health.
In a court filing, Warren wrote that instead of being the person most able and willing to protect the boy from harm, Karia "left him hanging by a noose around his neck in her basement."
The defense argued for probation, pointing out that Karia already has served time in jail and lost her child care career.

Disabled teenage daughter found in soiled nappy dies in house smelling of 'rotten food, human waste and death

Nicole Gussert has been charged with child neglect in her 13-year-old daughter's death: Outagamie County Jail via AP

The week before Brianna Gussert died, her mother called the local middle school to say her daughter would not be in class for the next five days. A week later, Nicole Hussert walked into her daughter’s room – allegedly for the first time in days – and found her dead.
Ms Gussert now faces 25 years in prison for the death of her 13-year-old daughter, who suffered from a chromosomal condition that required constant care. She was charged on Monday with one count of neglect resulting in death, and three counts of possession with intent to deliver amphetamine. She has yet to enter a plea.
Authorities who responded to Ms Gussert’s 911 call in May of 2017 said they found her daughter curled up in a bedroom upstairs, her head facing the foot of the bed. According to a criminal complaint, the house smelled of “rotten food, human waste and death”. It was filled with piles of clothes, garbage, and dirty dishes.
Brianna’s feeding tube was nearly empty, the complaint alleges, and her diaper had not been changed in days. Melinda Tempelis, the Outagamie County district attorney prosecuting the case, said Brianna's diaper weighed 1.25 pounds at the time she was found.
The teenager died primarily of sepsis – a complication of infections that can result in multiple organ failure, according to the complaint.
"[Ms Gussert] does not recall the last time she fed her. She does not recall the last time she changed her diaper,” Ms Tempelis said in court, according to local news station WLUK. “She had not been bathed in over a week. She had not been cared for or checked on.”
"It is completely unfit for habitation for anyone and over the course of that weekend,” she said.
Ms Gussert’s attorney, Robert Welygan, said in court that the criminal behaviour had not been proven by the state.
According to her father, Greg Gussert, Brianna was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, which can cause delayed development and intellectual disability.
Brianna couldn't speak, walk, or eat on her own, her father told the Appleton Post-Crescent. When she was born, doctors said she likely wouldn’t live past 18 months. The circumstances of his daughter's death, Mr Gussert said, was "some of the worst news I've ever heard".
“It's unbelievable what she had to go through," he told Fox News 11.
Mr and Ms Gussert are divorced, and – according to Mr Gussert – Brianna was living with her mother at the time of her death. Mr Gussert and his fiancée lived in an apartment blocks away, with Mr Gussert’s third daughter. Ms Gussert cared for Brianna and the couple’s second daughter because she had more space in her house, her ex-husband said.
"We're all heartbroken and it’s just like a wound that's being reopened,” he told Fox 11 of the charges.
According to the complaint, Brianna missed 162 days of school in her final year. Her mother allegedly told police the absences occurred, in part, because she did not want to deal with getting her daughter ready for school in the morning. She allegedly told officers her daughter had not been to school in “a couple of months,” aside from one day in February or March.
"We are all deeply saddened by Brianna’s death and express our deepest sympathies to all," her school district said in a statement. "The school district is required to follow the laws governing student confidentiality and student records. We cannot comment on any specific student and respect the privacy rights related to every student’s pupil record information."
Ms Gussert is being held on a $300,000 bond, pending her 19 June preliminary hearing. She faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for the neglect charge, and 12.5 years each for the drug charges. Her attorney did not respond to The Independent’s request for comment.
Brianna was remembered in her obituary as a “beautiful, bright, and charismatic young lady” who loved watching football and spending time with her family.
“Brianna had a smile that could brighten the darkest room,” the obituary read.

Sports Eagles running back Jay Ajayi reportedly sued for trashing mansion, shoving owner days after Super Bowl

Philadelphia Eagles running back Jay Ajayi is being sued by the owner of a Los Angeles mansion who claims he trashed the place, according to a TMZ report on Monday.
Ajayi is being charged $25,000 by the owner for damages to the 6,000-square-foot house where he and a friend stayed for five days shortly after the Eagles won the Super Bowl last season.
The 24-year-old allegedly had at least three parties while staying at the house, even though the owner specially told them not to throw any parties. The owner claims that Ajayi broke a table, scratched floors, violated the no-smoking policy, and failed to pay a $5,000 fee for each party.
When the owner confronted Ajayi about the penalty fees on Feb. 18, Ajayi allegedly “pushed [him] on [his] chest in a menacing and threatening manner,” according to TMZ. The owner also said he had to “call local security” to get Ajayi off his property.
The player’s rep denies the allegations.
Ajayi was traded to Philadelphia from Miami in the middle of last season. He ran for 408 yards on 70 carries for the Eagles in seven games, and scored two touchdowns. In the Eagles’ 41-33 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots, Ajayi ran for 57 yards on nine carries.

Jessica Simpson flaunts bikini bod and her husband's abs in vacation photos

Except for the occasional department store appearance to promote her billion-dollar clothing and shoe line, Jessica Simpson‘s life seems like one big vacation. Or maybe that’s just her “Instagram Life.” Either way, our favorite tuna queen has been on an actual vacation for the last week, with hubby Eric Johnson sans kids, and it’s been a sexy affair.
Maybe because TMZ posted some photos of her Bahamas vacay that weren’t superflattering (though they weren’t unflattering either — she’s a gorgeous girl), she’s been posting up a storm on social media. So we rounded up all of the photos in one spot for an Instacram viewing experience.
If we were captioning these ourselves, we’d go with “wowza” for this shot of the couple, who have been together for eight years and are still superhot for each other. For a photo inside a closet, we see very little clothing and a lot of skin, especially his abs.
