Baby girl with 'worst case of meningitis in decades' after her fourth limb amputation

Little Kia Gett has had all four of her limbs amputated during her battle with the deadly illness.  The ten-month-old was first rushed to hospital in September after her dad Paul, 35, went to check on her during the night and found that her body was covered in a rash, a known symptom of meningitis.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and the baby girl had a mini cardiac arrest before she was rushed to Bradford Royal Infirmary, West Yorkshire.
Tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for the family of a baby girl who contracted ‘the worst case of meningitis in decades’.
A JustGiving page started to raise money for Kia and her family has now raised more than £25,000.

Her parents Paul and Vikki were then given the devastating news that she would have to have all four of her limbs amputated.
An MRI scan showed that Kia would be deaf, blind and have 90 per cent brain damage.
The little girl’s mum had taken her to the GP a few days before as Kia was ‘not herself’, but consultants have since told the family that the GP would not have been able to detect meningitis at that time.

Woman jailed for life for killing man who sexually abused her as a child

Brown has served nine years of a 51-year sentence: Snapshot/Dan Birman
Campaigners are calling for the release of a woman jailed for life after killing a man who picked her up for sex when she was 16.
Cyntonia Brown was given a 51-year prison sentence for the first-degree murder of 43-year-old estate agent Johnny Allen.
Brown was being trafficked by an abusive man in 2004 when Mr Allen picked her up on the street.
She says she was afraid of the 43-year-old, who she said was behaving strangely and owned a number of guns. She shot Mr Allen in the head because she was afraid he was going to hurt her, she claimed.
Yet prosecutors successfully argued Brown killed Mr Allen while robbing him. She left with his trousers, which contained his wallet, and some guns.
Now 25 years old, calls are growing for Brown's release. A petition on the progressive policy advocacy group MoveOn.org has accrued 49,100 signatures of a 50,000 goal.
The petition says: "This woman (who is now 25) was only a child at 16 years of age at the time of the incident when her 42-year-old victim (a grown man who had lived his life) solicited sex with [her].
"He had the upper-hand being the adult and should have made the decision to help her seek a better way instead of co-signing on her destruction by soliciting sex."
In 2011 documentary following Brown's story called Me Facing Life: Cyntonia's Story, Founder of End Slavery TN Derri Smith, said: “She did kill someone, she deeply regrets it, but she was a child and she was being exploited."
Ms Smith said changes in Texas' law in recent years mean Brown would not be convicted if she was put on trial today. “[There's] no such thing as a child prostitute or a teen prostitute, I think we've had to have a cultural mind shift,” she said.

Top Five African performers from weekend's World Cup qualifiers

Who were the continent's star performers during the weekend's qualifiers?
John Ogu has endured something of a frustrating recent revival with the national side. Discarded by previous managers, he's been recalled to the fold by Gernot Rohr, but has spend the recent international breaks watching on from the substitutes bench.
While Rohr opted not to turn to Ogu when Nigeria arguably needed him most - in the draw against Cameroon - the Israel-based midfielder was handed a starting berth against Algeria.
He didn't disappoint, and capped of an authoritative, composed midfield display with the Super Eagles' opener.
It's a performance that should dispel any suggestions that Ogu might miss the cut for Russia, and might even persuade Rohr to consider him for a starting spot.
Patson Daka: While Zambia were denied victory over Cameroon at the death due to Yaya Banana's late equaliser, the Chipolopolo ended their campaign in style with a delicious attacking display.
The emergence of Brian Mwila and 19-year-old Daka have been two of the great subplots of this qualifying campaign, and the latter delivered another star turn this weekend.
First, he netted Zambia's opener, and then, just after the hour mark, combined joyously with Mwila to set up the Platinum Stars frontman for the hosts' second.
This was the kind of technical sophistication that we haven't seen - at least not this cohesively - form recent Zambian sides, and while the Copper Bullets may not be heading to the World Cup, the future looks bright.
Edwin Gyasi certainly impressed on his maiden start for the Black Stars, delivering an accomplished all-round performance and netting the deflected equaliser as Ghana drew 1-1 with Egypt in Cape Coast.
The Aalesund FK attacker only made his international debut in the recent 5-1 victory over Congo-Brazzaville in September, but looked as though he was a seasoned international by using the ball intelligently, playing in team mates with his astute delivery and beating his man on several occasions.
Gyasi did enough to suggest that he could be one of the key building blocks for Kwesi Appiah's new Ghanaian side.
Shikabala is one of the most talented North African players of his generation, with sublime technique and the confidence to execute some more audacious moves.
However, his application has been questioned, and too often he's drifted in and out of games - decorating them occasionally but not making enough in the way of a consistent contribution.
With Mohamed Salah absent, the Al-Raed FC man was restored to the side and revelled in the playmaking role. Now 31, experience appears to have curved his more individualistic play of the past, and after a strong showing - complete with a sensational opener - he will fancy his chances of making the plane to Russia.
Medhi Benatia: While a trip to Abidjan should - on paper - have been Morocco's toughest assignment of the group stage campaign, they eased into Russia fairly comfortably after netting twice in five first-half minutes.
Against a dismal team, however, they still needed to stymie any Ivorian hopes of a renaissance, and as well as scoring the decisive second goal, Benatia was a rock at the back throughout the encounter.
He organised those around him effectively, and was quick to snuff out the forays forward of the likes of Gervinho, Wilfried Zaha and Serge Aurier.
Remarkably, Morocco didn't concede a single goal during their entire World Cup qualifying campaign, and with Benatia in the heart of the backline, they'll be tough to break down next summer.

Hunting Season Begins in North Cyprus..... Keep your head down!

You may hear gunshots ringing out in the TRNC today- don’t panic- it’s not war. Unless of course, you happen to be a small, defenceless creature like a rabbit, hare or bird of some sort.. The hunting season began yesterday 6th Nov. 2017, and will run for 11 days between 5 November and 31 December, the Council of Ministers have ruled.
North Cyprus News - Hunter

It’s a well known fact that the population of several breeds of rabbits and some birds have drastically depleted on the island, and yet, every year, we see yet another ‘hunting season’.

Rabbits are already terribly depleted on the island

Hunting was once a necessity for families who lived in a sustained state of poverty. Often, the hunt would provide the only rare source of meat to eat.
But now, in 2017, is this really sensible?
The vast fields and mountains, which were once home to colonies of rabbit and hare are now a rarity. Pheasants, which were once a magnificent sight in the skies are barely ever visible.
One must ask, what exactly is this ‘hunting season’ in aid of?
Gone are the days where families would look to father or husband with pleading eyes, hungry and desperate for him to bring home something that would be warm and nutritious and although there are many families in Cyprus who struggle financially, it’s certainly a far cry from the malnutrition which has plagued Cypriots several times in their history.

Pheasants were once a common sight, now rarely ever seen

In fact, when was the last time you went to a restaurant and saw rabbit on the menu? When was the last time you were planning meals for the week, and thought to yourself ‘I really fancy a bit of Pheasant…’? When was the last time you saw these meats at the butcher section of Lemar?
Rather, today, what we have are groups of ridiculous men, dressed up in camouflage, looking like a life-sized Action Man Doll, chests puffed up with outdated chauvinism and misplaced pride.
Anybody who loves their country would surely agree that it’s far more kind, and far more sensible to preserve the natural beauty, that is wild life, and encourage the growth of the Eco- System, which ultimately sustains the health and very lives of the human population. One does not need university education to understand the travesty of driving a species of your country into extinction.  Although this notion may seem far fetched, it’s not an impossible one, as Cyprus is well and truly on the fast track of causing the extinction of some of its wildlife hosted upon the island.
Perhaps one day, the hunting season can be replaced with an Eco season. Where men, women and children can come together as a community, clean up the natural spots on the island, and in place of mess, plant herbs, vegetation, trees and bushes which will feed, shelter, and perhaps, recover the wildlife which we are guilty of destroying. Surely, the sense of community spirit and the satisfaction that will come with bearing witness to the fruits of their labour, as seeds blossom into flowers, twigs turn into trees and wildlife returns, at the hands of those who may work to fix this, would be a real reason to feel proud? As opposed to the misplaced pride people feel when hanging small, dead animals from their belts, as though it’s a trophy of masculinity. Really?  Could there be anything more pathetic??
Maintaining tradition and culture is, without  doubt, an essential part of maintaining ethnic identity but sometimes, on rare occasions and matters such as these, some traditions need to be altered or reinvented entirely – lest we lose an enormous part of the beauty of this county, if it’s not already too late.

26 killed in church attack in Texas' deadliest mass shooting

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas (AP) — A man dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a church in a small South Texas community on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding about 20 in what the governor called the deadliest mass shooting in the state's history. The dead ranged in age from 5 to 72 years old.
Authorities didn't identify the attacker during a news conference Sunday night, but two other officials — one a U.S. official and one in law enforcement — identified him as Devin Kelley. They spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the investigation.
The U.S. official said Kelley lived in a San Antonio suburb and didn't appear to be linked to organized terrorist groups. Investigators were looking at social media posts Kelley made in the days before Sunday's attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon.
An Air Force spokeswoman said Sunday night that Devin P. Kelley received a bad-conduct discharge from the Air Force for allegedly assaulting his spouse and child, and was sentenced to 12 months' confinement after a 2012 court-martial. Kelley served in Logistics Readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his discharge, spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said.
At the news conference, the attacker was described only as a white man in his 20s who was wearing black tactical gear and a ballistic vest when he pulled into a gas station across from the First Baptist Church around 11:20 a.m.
The gunman crossed the street and started firing a Ruger AR rifle at the church, said Freeman Martin, a regional director of the Texas Department of Safety, then continued firing after entering the white wood-frame building, where an 11 a.m. service was scheduled. As he left, the shooter was confronted by an armed resident who "grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect," Martin said. A short time later, the suspect was found dead in his vehicle at the county line.
Several weapons were found inside the vehicle and Martin said it was unclear if the attacker died of a self-inflicted wound or if he was shot by the resident who confronted him. He said investigators weren't ready to discuss a possible motive. Martin said 23 of the dead were found in the church, two were found outside and one died after being taken to a hospital.
Addressing the news conference, Gov. Greg Abbott called the attack the worst mass shooting in Texas history.
"There are no words to describe the pure evil that we witnessed in Sutherland Springs today," Abbott said. "Our hearts are heavy at the anguish in this small town, but in time of tragedy, we see the very best of Texas. May God comfort those who've lost a loved one, and may God heal the hurt in our communities."
Among those killed was the church pastor's 14-year-old daughter, Annabelle Pomeroy. Pastor Frank Pomeroy, and his wife, Sherri, were both out of town in two different states when the attack occurred, Sherri Pomeroy wrote in a text message to the AP.
"We lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends," she wrote. "Neither of us has made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as i can."
Federal law enforcement swarmed the small rural community of a few hundred residents 30 miles southeast of San Antonio after the attack, including ATF investigators and members of the FBI's evidence collection team.
At least 16 wounded were taken to hospitals, hospital officials said, including eight taken by medical helicopter to the Brooke Army Medical Center. Another eight victims were taken to Connally Memorial Medical Center, located in Floresville about 10 miles from the church, including four who were later transferred to University Hospital in San Antonio for higher-level care, said spokeswoman Megan Posey.
Hunter Green, 16, normally attends the church with his girlfriend but they skipped Sunday after a late date night. Attending a candlelight vigil hours later, he described the building as having only small exits on the side and in the back that would have made it very difficult to flee a shooter entering the front door.
"They wouldn't have had anywhere to go," Green said.
Alena Berlanga, a Floresville resident who was monitoring the chaos on a police scanner and in Facebook community groups, said everyone knows everyone else in the sparsely populated county.
"This is horrific for our tiny little tight-knit town," Berlanga said. "Everybody's going to be affected and everybody knows someone who's affected."
Regina Rodriguez, who arrived at the church a couple of hours after the shooting, walked up to the police barricade and hugged a person she was with. She said her father, 51-year-old Richard Rodriguez, attends the church every Sunday, and she hadn't been able to reach him. She said she feared the worst.
Church member Nick Uhlig, 34, wasn't at Sunday's service, but he said his cousins were at the church and that his family was told at least one of them, a woman with three children and pregnant with another, was among the dead.
"We just gathered to bury their grandfather on Thursday," he said, shaking his head. "This is the only church here. We have Bible study, men's Bible study, vacation Bible school. Somebody went in and started shooting."
President Donald Trump, who was in Japan, called the shooting an "act of evil" and said he was monitoring the situation.
"We're shocked. Shocked and dismayed," said state Sen. Judith Zaffirini, a Laredo Democrat whose district includes Sutherland Springs, a rural community known for its peanut festival, which was held last month. "It's especially shocking when it's such a small, serene area. These rural areas, they are so beautiful and so loving."
Later Sunday, two sheriff's vans were parked outside the gate of a cattle fence surrounding the address listed for Kelley on the rural, western outskirts of New Braunfels, north of San Antonio, preventing a group of waiting journalists from entering. Officials from the Comal County Sherriff's Office and the Texas Rangers declined to comment or say if they had raided his home.
Ryan Albers, 16, who lives across the road said he heard intensifying gunfire coming from that direction in recent days.
"It had to be coming from somewhere pretty close," Albers said. "It was definitely not just a shotgun or someone hunting. It was someone using automatic weapon fire."
The church has posted videos of its Sunday services on a YouTube channel, raising the possibility that the shooting was captured on video.
In a video of its Oct. 8 service, a congregant who spoke and read Scripture pointed to the Oct. 1 Las Vegas shooting a week earlier as evidence of the "wicked nature" of man. That shooting left 58 dead and more than 500 injured.
Until Sunday, the deadliest mass shooting in Texas had been a 1991 attack in Killeen, when a mentally disturbed man crashed his pickup truck through a restaurant window at lunchtime and started shooting people, killing 23 and injuring more than 20 others.
The University of Texas was the site of one of the most infamous mass shootings in American history, when U.S. Marine sniper Charles Whitman climbed the Austin campus' clock tower in 1966 and began firing on stunned people below, killing 13 and wounding nearly three dozen others. He had killed his wife and mother before heading to the tower, one victim died a week later and medical examiners eventually attributed a 17th death to Whitman in 2001.

Snoop Dogg: 'Album artwork' takes another swipe at Donald Trump

Snoop Dogg apparently made another swipe at US President Donald Trump by revealing some new album artwork.
The rapper reportedly posted an image on his Instagram account which showed him standing over a dead body coverered with the American flag.
The body's foot had a tag attached which read: "Trump."
Snoop Dogg appears to have revealed some album artwork for his new record: AP
TMZ reported that the record cover was posted on Snoop's Instagram on Tuesday but it appears to have since been deleted.
Make America Crip Again is Snoop's follow up record to Coolaid, which came out in 2016.
The image pays tribute to Ice Cube's 1991 record cover for Death Certificate, which showed him standing over a dead body, also covered by the American flag, with a tag which said "Uncle Sam."
Ice Cube's cover caused mass controversy upon its release, leading to condemnations from Billboard magainze and widespread boycotts by retailers. In Oregon, there was an official statewide ban on displaying Ice Cube's image in stores.

One child also said that both Cheyanne and James Chalkley "take turns" spanking her.
A child also said James Chalkley has "used a shock collar on her," and that it "hurt more" than being spanked with a belt. The child also reportedly told investigators that it was the same type of shock collar used on dogs.
Among these horrific allegations, a child also accused James Chalkley of putting "poop" on her toothbrush and brushing her teeth so hard with it that "it caused her to bleed."
This comes after he believed the children involved "intentionally refused to clean up 'cat feces'" in a closet, according to an arrest warrant.

Students and staff at an elementary school in California were safely evacuated Tuesday after a disturbance involving a parent who allegedly barricaded himself inside a classroom with a female teacher. The suspect was shot by police and later pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.
According to Riverside police, the incident started just before noon when the suspect stormed into the school. The man, identified by police as 27-year-old Luvelle Kennon of Riverside, allegedly punched a substitute teacher in the face and broke his nose before taking the female teacher hostage.
Officer Ryan Railsback said that officers and SWAT team members isolated the classroom and then helped to evacuate students and staff.
Negotiators had not heard from the victim while talking to the suspect, so the decision was made to go in and rescue her, police said.
The teacher was also transported to a hospital after being rescued, but suffered only minor injuries, according to the Riverside Police Department.
The motive was unknown.
Riverside Unified School District said that all students at Castle View Elementary had been accounted for, were safe and had been reunited with parents or guardians with proper photo identification. Students were in lunch at the time and not in the classroom, officials said.

"Our officers responded up to Castle View Elementary School ... for some type of disturbance, possibly involving one of the parents. When they arrived, they learned that there was some type of altercation that occurred and now a parent was barricaded inside one of the classrooms with what we believe is a teacher," Railsback said during a news conference Tuesday.
Railsback said authorities were not sure why the parent was at the school or whether there had been previous issues with the parent at the school. He also said police did not know if the parent had a weapon in the classroom with him.
"As far as we know, nothing's been reported that anyone saw actual weapons of any kind," he said. "He's not responding to our commands for him to come out, so far. ... He's barricaded himself in there and he's got a teacher in there so it'd be a barricaded hostage situation."
